Three Reasons to Leave the Adventist Church & One Reason to Stay…for Now*

November 5, 2015

#1. It’s hard for us to believe Christ’s description, “blind and naked,” of His last lukewarm church in Revelation 3:15-20 applies to us. Truthfully, His words are addressed to the aggelos, or messenger. It’s really the pastors or church leadership that God holds responsible, but the church rarely rises above its leaders.

Because Christ’s call to come out of the false systems that include medicine, education, government and religion, all Christians, and especially Seventh-day Adventists, should take a deeper look at what these messages mean for today.

#2. In her book on Christ’s life, Ellen White titled the chapter on the fig tree as ‘A Doomed People’. It was about the Jewish nation then, like the fig tree flaunting its pretentious leaves but lacking fruit. Christ cursed the tree as a lesson against empty or shallow religion. “So it is now,” wrote Ellen White from Australia where brethren sent her to get rid of her agitation for righteousness by faith, DA 588.

She returned to appeal for a reorganization of the General Conference in 1901. They voted her request, but never carried it out and in 1903, they voted a hierarchical structure that GC President Wilson said in court was like the Roman Catholic Church. (Merikay Silver v PPPA).

Ellen White’s response to 1903 was, “How is the faithful city become an harlot? My Father’s house is made a house of merchandise; a place whence the divine presence and glory have departed.” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol 8, pg 250).

Two years later she wrote, “the great apostasy which is developing…will continue to do so until the Lord shall descend from heaven with a shout.” Special Testimonies, Series B, #7, 1905. But Special Testimonies, Series B was burned in the basement of the General Conference. BT Anderson, custodian was told they had extra copies they didn’t need, to stoke up the furnace. After he retired, he said they burned her books.

Church leaders cite Ellen White that we should not call the church “Babylon,” but she later wrote, “The first, second and third angels’ messages will need to be repeated. The call will be given to the church, Come out of her, My people, that ye be not partakers of her sins.” Manuscript 92a, 1898. There’s more than can be said here.

Ellen White played a key role in Loma Linda’s development. At one point, when the brethren had no money, her check for $35,000 mailed from Australia months earlier arrived on the date that payment was due.

Ellen White envisioned Loma Linda as a place where thousands were to be trained, not as professional doctors and nurses but as gospel medical missionaries going from home to home, giving simple treatments, praying for the sick, singing gospel songs and claiming Bible promises.

It never happened. She said drugs do not cure disease. Pharmacology was not to be taught. Church leaders seeking accreditation were told “no” twice but after a third trip to see her when she refused to see them, they reported to the committee that “she didn’t say no,” and everything changed as Loma Linda taught pharmacology and graduated licensed MD’s instead of a system of natural healing she envisioned.

3. Medical care is now a leading cause of death due to Adverse Drug Reactions from drugs “properly prescribed and administered.” Journal of AMA, 4-15-1998. SDA hospitals are essentially no different than Catholic hospitals that have the same medical care, diet, TV and a generic chaplain to say a prayer.

National Geographic featured Loma Linda in their cover story on longevity, Nov, 2005, but SDA health has nothing to do with medical care—it’s what Ellen White wrote about food that has made Adventists healthy, a message we’ve conveyed so poorly that NIH spent millions to discover why we live about 7 extra years.

The world would also be wondering why our educational system is so successful if we had stayed with the counsels of Ellen White instead of seeking accreditation and doing what they said we needed. Now we must teach Jesuit Spiritual Formation to ministers to keep our accreditation—what a disaster!

In addition to all of the above, top General Conference leaders hold to several serious errors.

1. The hierarchical church structure condemned by Ellen White in 1903 (above)
2. The name, “Seventh-day Adventist” was trademarked so the GC could sue any church that didn’t meet their standards” which include paying the tithe to them so that it has control over what is done and said in all “SDA” churches.
3. Millions of dollars were raised under President Ted Wilson for The Great Controversy to be used in sharing our message, but after a severe editing, it hardly mentioned Luther, the pope or the sins of Babylon, and it has such fine print that some say it’s really The Great Hoax, not the new title, The Great Hope.

4. When President Truman tried to appoint an ambassador to the Vatican, there was such a protest that he could not do so. But when President Reagan did so, the GC under Neal Wilson gave their consent by silence and it’s been downhill for America since then, continuing under Ted Wilson with NOTHING said as the pope came to address the US Congress.

5. Ellen White foresaw the Catholic changes in our church. She “dreamed that [she] was in Battle Creek looking out from the side glass at the door and saw a company marching up to the house, two and two. They looked stern and determined. I knew them well and turned to open the parlor door to receive them, but thought I would look again. The scene was changed.
“The company now presented the appearance of a Catholic procession. One bore in his hand a cross, another a reed. And as they approached, the one carrying a reed made a circle around the house, saying three times: “This house is proscribed. The goods must be confiscated. They have spoken against our holy order.” Terror seized me, and I ran through the house, out of the north door, and found myself in the midst of a company, some of whom I knew, but I dared not speak a word to them for fear of being betrayed.” 1Testiminonies p 578.

She “knew them well,” but then it became a Catholic procession. Is that from her time to ours? Destiny depends on our understanding of the three angels’ messages, and those in the “blind” church are in grave danger.

SDA pioneers believed the judgment scene in Daniel 7:9,10 was on the Day of Atonement in 1844. But they overlooked the context of “great words.” Napoleon had taken the pope prisoner and he died in exile. The little horn had NO great words in 1844, but in 2015, ON the Day of Atonement, the pope, speaking to US Congress, had “great words” mentioned four times in Dan 7:8,11,20,25.

SDA pioneers suffered a Great Disappointment (Google) typified by the “bitter belly” of John when he ate the little book of Daniel and was told he “must prophesy again,” Rev 10:11. SDA leaders have no interest in “prophesy again.”

They don’t understand how the messages that didn’t fit 1844 now fit as judgment comes to the living with life and death issues as in Daniel 1-6. But because of their reluctance to proclaim the message of Judgment (Rev 14:7), we may expect that judgment will befall the church in order to convey the message to the world, much like the Jews became a rejected people after 70 AD.

*But this is not the time to leave the church. We should do what we can to awaken others who are represented as asleep with lights out in Matthew 25:5. We are coming to verse 6, a midnight cry that Ellen White likened to “a sudden and unlooked-for calamity.” COL 412.

“Judgment must begin at the house of God.” 1Pet 4:17. It will convey the message, “the Bridegroom comes! Go ye OUT to meet Him.” Matt 25:6.

Please read The Bridegroom Comes!  to understand how to be ready next spring. Ellen White understood the execution of judgment on the living who are out of compliance with the law, even as Moses faced death for non-compliance in Exodus 4:24. Adventists are similarly out of compliance.

Mrs. White said there would never again be a message based on [prophetic] time. But “Fear God and give glory to Him, for the TIME of His judgment is come” is not based on time prophecy; it’s based on LAW—please consider how in the next article, The Bridegroom Comes!

Very timely observations, and definitely something to chew on and watch for. Our leadership failed to learn the lessons of Israel’s experience, wanting to be like the nations (churches) around them. They weren’t called to be like everyone else, they were called to stand out, to be head and shoulders above the world.

Thank you, Rose, for visiting and your comment. Israel had God as King and they wanted one they could see. Bad choice and this was an issue 115 years ago…we are entering end-times with this pope’s visit to US Congress on the Day of Atonement (10th day of 7th month, counting from the New Moon that started March 20 with eclipse and blood moon (like blood on doorpost) at Passover, 2015.

None of us are what we think we are, but what we think—we are! We can’t judge Carson, but I’ve been in his SS class when he taught and I would say Pray for him!

I’ve been talking to some people over seas. The world is watching Ben Carson to see if he can reform the US. That made me think. Seeing comments from people riding Ben Carson’s coat tails to popularity made me see something and ask a question. The SDA church boasts about 18 million members,. But are contributing popularity and worldwide exposure to 1 man. If the role of all of Jesus’ disciples was to announce His message to the world, what have the other 18 million members been doing? I’d like to know.

I think you asked a good question that every Christian needs to answer for himself. The wedding parables suggest we have lights burning (to show the way) and you can get a free copy of an ebook with mostly 5-star reviews if you visit before Sunday

From what I’ve seen, Dr. Carson is a very sincere and dedicated believer whose work and reputation put him in front of high ranking officials. He was distressed at the direction this nation is heading and had this turning point moment where he had the opportunity to address those issues in front of a huge audience with Obama right there. It was a golden opportunity to speak to the issues and he took it (not without consequences, I might add) and that led to a push for him to run for office. I’m not sure he has a chance of becoming president (because I don’t believe our votes are actually counted in that election), but the world is hearing about a Seventh-day Adventist who stands for something that many of them believe in, and millions are being led to information about our faith. The world only sees a man of faith who is calm under pressure and isn’t afraid to stand up against the tide of evil he sees in the world. That is an impressive characteristic in this corrupt world. Many will be looking at the Advent message for the first time because of his time in the spotlight. Is our denomination faithful to those principles? No. But the God who made blind eyes see is able to make seeing eyes blind to those irregularities so they can learn the truth and decide for themselves. And He is able to lead those newcomers just as He has the rest of us who take issue with the denomination’s ways. I see this as a golden moment in the world’s history and a great opportunity for evangelism, regardless of the outcome of the political campaign.
